We all have to reach our own comfort level about gunshow restrictions. I've never seen a valid sign around here, so I don't worry about it; I carry anyway. My gun is only leaving my holster for one reason, and if that reason pops up, I'm not worried about trespassing charges.
That said, if I did decide to comply with wire-tie requirements to attend a gun show, I would be the one to clear and show empty. My response to anyone, police or otherwise, demanding to handle my gun would... well, let's just say it wouldn't pass the 10yo daughter rule.
I'd want my money back, for both admission and parking. I might not get it, but I'd raise a big stink. I'd try to turn around everyone in line, and everyone in the parking lot.

From a safety point of view, I'd rather idiots and criminals not carry guns. Thing is, though, they do carry, and neither laws nor rules seem to have much effect on their behavior.txinvestigator wrote:From a safety point of view, I do not want people having loaded handguns at shows. You KNOW there is too much a chance for some goober to discharge his loaded handgun while doing something stupid.
Of all the NDs reported at gun shows, I can't think of any off hand that involved a customer's concealed handgun. I'm not saying there haven't been any, but most NDs I've read about have involved vendors' guns.
I recall one report last year involving trying to force a pistol into an ill-fitting holster, but I think that was a vendor using his own pistol.

Re: Carry at a gun show
I do, but I also have a strict personal policy that my concealed handgun stays concealed. That means no trying out new holsters, accessories, etc., for that particular pistol.rockusaf wrote:Just curious, I bought my Kimber at a gun show and on my way in it said all guns needed to be unloaded. All guns were being checked and zip-tied to verify they were unloaded. I didn't have a CHL at the time so I didn't know what a legal sign was, but my question is if it is at a convention center or similar building and isn't 30.06 posted, what do you do? Do you carry anyway since it's not illegal to do so?
Wireties can't idiot-proof a gun; they can only slow the idiots down, and only then if they're not particularly determined in their idiocy.
I've never grasped the logic of, "In order to prevent accidents by the tiny minority who might pull out and handle their loaded concealed handguns, we're going to make everyone pull out and handle their loaded concealed handguns." Clearing and loading are the two operations most likely to result in a discharge. I'd rather they just stay in the holster.
Because I'm a cruffler, I generally carry a notebook organizer that has copies of my C&R FFL and some reference materials. I'm always asked at the door if it's a pistol, because all guns have to be checked and tied. I smile and say no, and go about my business.
