Is it bad that I'm always happy for the 4th week or so when the freshmen start dropping? The parking just gets so much better.TexasJohnBoy wrote:I can attest to the fact that the general population is no different this semester from last in terms of courtesy.
And no one notices the concealed handgun, just like everywhere else in the state. After a couple days I was back to my normal, not a newbie carrying self. It was like the Wally walk for a bit.
I have noticed that everyone simultaneously forgot how stop signs worked after move in too.

I asked the gentleman in his mid 40s (old enough to know better) "Sir did you not see me waiting there with my turn signal on?"
His response? "Yes I did, so?"
Was I irritated? Oh yea.
Did I for a second want to shoot him? Nope
Did I want to ram his pretty little mustang? Nah, but she definitely deserves a better owner.
Grrr. I may still leave a note letting him know what I think of his arrogant behavior if his car is still there after class....
If he has a university parking sticker, there is a number on it that you can turn in as a reckless driver, or any other undesirable action, you can make up....um, I mean report him for.

He did accelerate into an enclosed parking spot by way of cutting me off....I guess it would be dependent on how you define reckless. I just told him he was rude. Which he was. He was also a few other choice words that I did not express...at least not where anyone could hear me. In the end I did find another space and made it to class 2 minutes before it began, so no real harm done, but gah he made me mad.

Wish I would have thought of that. His car was gone when I came out. I'm just hoping the rain soaked his rump since he left his window cracked.Jusme wrote:TexasTornado wrote:Well it's a good thing we're not the gun brandishing wackos they all think we are. Re: Carrying on Campus
You may try different pants too. I always wear my jeans a little big but I've lost 25 lbs since I last wore these (the dryer didnt quite get my other jeans dry) so these are about 2 sizes too large for me, but soooo much more comfortable with my OWN holster. With my other jeans the thumb break strap digs into my hip just a little. Not so bad as to put it in my back oak but enough to adjust it when I get back to my truck.jb2012 wrote:I had a slight failure today. I was carrying in a milt sparks iwb at about 2:30 and that holster is dreadfully uncomfortable accompanied by a 1911 if sitting for extended periods- i.e. during class. So I ended up just putting it in my backpack. Tomorrow I'll try my galco king tuck and see how that works out. On a side note, I thought I was having a blow-off semester, but after both classes I had today, that idea is unfortunately non-existent

Re: Carrying on Campus
I know Grayson has always been a mess of contradictions. How do you ban guns from school property that has a shooting range? and it's open to more than just the police academy students too...Boxerrider wrote:The cheapest and easiest way to implement - don't put up any signs, and remove any restrictions on firearms from your student and employee publications.
Community colleges often have satellites in places that overlap with high schools, federal property, etc. and who defines where as what gets complicated. Much of the conflict would be cleared by removing those as prohibited areas as well.

Re: Carrying on Campus
Also the resources available to a 4 year institution to meet a shortened deadline far exceed that of most community schools. I doubt little Grayson College is going to have a conglomerate of boards, presidents, and reagents working on their implementation policy.Papa_Tiger wrote:From a logistics standpoint, I can understand why community colleges will implement at a separate time. Allowing universities the ability to set up "reasonable restrictions" on where handguns may be carried was required to get the bill passed. The legislature wanted to be able to review the restrictions implemented by the universities to see if the intent of the law was being followed. I would imagine that there are fewer public 4-year universities than community colleges. Having the 4-year universities go first allows the legislature to evaluate the implementations and take action to set guidelines that the community colleges can follow as a template.RogueUSMC wrote:already having had a year, why are community colleges any different?
For example, if 4-year universities decide that areas that have school aged children should be off limits (justified erroneously by a tortured reading of TPC 46.03 (a)(1)), then this gives the legislature time to fix TPC 46.03 (a)(1) and state that it should not be used as justification to ban people from carrying in classrooms that could have dual credit high-school students in attendance.

Correct. Community colleges start campus carry in 2017.RogueUSMC wrote:I was told by a student (going to Tyler Junior College) that campus security said you couldn't carry on their campus because the law allows a year to 'prepare for it'...

I did carry on August 2nd but was only on campus about 45 minutes to take an exam, no professor present just the TA.TexasJohnBoy wrote:Aug 1 felt like a day long Wally walk for me (I'm a staff member so I've been on campus since day one...)
At my campus, the police have been very firm in the statement that the licensed people are not an issue and that people DO and HAVE carried illegal weapons on campus, and been arrested for it, already. it's actually been refreshing, dare I say it.
Now the academics... To them, the sky is falling.
The authority figures and their outspoken criticism of the policy cause the discomfort.....they should really watch their microaggressions toward students....oh wait, we're not a "disadvantaged minority."

Chas.
Curious as to what you think about the legality of the addition of offices to the policy. Based on what our AG said about delegation of authority I would have thought this wouldn't be up to individual professors anyou more than classrooms are.

Partially an ATEC/EMAC thing. I'vedefinitely seen a difference between them and my professorson in less technology oriented fields.SHogun62 wrote:I stand corrected, missed that one line in the first paragraph. I've never had a reason to meet with an instructor in their office, so I don't see a need to worry about it on my end. I don't know if it's an ATEC thing or what, but most of my instructors prefer communication via email.

LOL if only I could say that with a straight face.Rokyudai wrote:Not necessarily. Re: Carrying on Campus
I'm not sure if they submitted to the state individually or as a System. UT in Austin had this stipulation all along. Many of the other schools announced it last minute as you can see by the date on the email 8/1.Rokyudai wrote:Does anyone know: Was it snuck in with the original proposal that they sent to the state for review or did they add it after? I just wonder if the latter is true, does it carry weight or are they in violation of the state review stipulation for 'off limits' spaces?TexasTornado wrote:Yes, UTD added the ability for professors in single occupancy offices to ban into the policy. None of my professors tried to ban weapons from the classroom; although, I do expect one of my class buildings will be posted at a later date. The biggest mention I had was one professor who said weapons weren't allowed in his office. As his class is the one I'm dropping it was a non issue for me personally, but I am eager to see the AG take this power from professors based on some of the comments made during the UT classroom lawsuit.
Overall it was a good experience.
Chas.
I don't know of any policies set forth in UTD's recommendation and implementation letters that give Professors the authority to ban their offices. The only off limits areas were resident dorms(minors), Callier Center(patients), sporting events, and the bio engineering and sciences lab buildings(things that don't react well to detonations and projectiles).
*edit* still waiting to hear back from the commission regarding my question about their definition of "printing", and it's resulting disciplinary actions.
Edit: added photo of email.
