Gates seems to be playing both sides of the issue. He has backtracked his comments from yesterday, but does not seem to be willing to commit to one side or the other (he is certainly smart enough to know the issues), and he is now making general statements like "apple should help FBI", which of course Apple had been doing since day 1.Bitter Clinger wrote: And to add final insult to injury, and I am certain that there is no commercial motive behind it all, now Bill Gates agrees with me

Re: This is why I will not own any Apple products!
This specific iPhone is a 5C, running iOS 9.x. It is protected by a 6 digit numeric passcode. That is 1 million possible passwords. The crypto engine in this phone can do about 12 tries per second, so worst case is just under 24 hours to solve with Apple's help.ScottDLS wrote: Except the phone will wipe itself after 10 wrong tries. The gov does not like strong encryption, because they can't break it without some backdoor method of getting the key. In an 8 character password there are ~256 to the 8th power possible passwords. About 18 quadrillion, so at 9 per second it will take you billions of years... and of course the memory will be wiped on the tenth wrong try.
Had alphanumeric passwords been selected, then there would be 77 possible characters with total length of 37, making it impossible for FBI to get in unless he used a simple password.

I will be shocked if the current court has the final say. I expect this to be an ongoing issue till finally resolved perhaps by SCOTUS. This case is very much unlike any previous cases I know of.WildBill wrote:It with be interesting to see what happens when the deadline is reached, i.e. if Apple is held in contempt and then what will happen.

To this day I am not sure what happened to TrueCrypt, but the above statement is true. If Apple loses, the entire US crypto industry cannot be trusted.treadlightly wrote: As a result, US-based encryption will always have a shadow of distrust, and I wonder how long it will take bad guys to apply a little meta-encryption.

Ralph Peters is completely off the rails. "Tim Cook is telling terrorists, rapists and thugs, hey buy an iPhone, Apple has your back".treadlightly wrote:Tonight on Fox (O'Reilly, I think), I heard a gentleman argue with passion against the private use of unbreakable cryptography. Plentiful reasons exist to crack terrorist communications wide open.
From what I have seen, 99% of the non-tech people think Apple has the key in a safe at Cupertino and is refusing to give it FBI.

Phones with A7 chip and running IOS greater than 8.1.1 are much, much hard to break. This is why the FBI cannot do it themselves with a IP-Box.Bitter Clinger wrote:
Profit motive pure and simple for Apple. They have unlocked many phones before and the FBI is NOT asking for all phones, just this one.
If Apple unlocks this one, then the next court order will be to give the FBI the code to do it to all of them. There is no way to put the genie back in the bottle.

Re: This is why I will not own any Apple products!
The FBI wants AAPL to create and install an iOS that removes wipe, removes delay and allows passcodes to be remotely entered via Cable, BT, or WiFi from a PC so they do not have to type them. A new OS will not allow them to unlocks the phone automatically.Smokey wrote:I would also wonder how they could load new software on it without first unlocking it. If Apple could do that, they could just load on a new OS that unlocks the phone automatically, without having to make the FBI to brute force guess the password. I wonder if the auto-wiping logic is in a less restricted part of the phone that can be changed without unlocking the phone. Otherwise what the FBI is asking for makes no sense

They did. His last back-up was Oct. 19, 2015. They think he turned off iCloud backups after that.SewTexas wrote:ah, ok.
so, why not get a warrant for that specific back-up? wouldn't that make more sense?

Bitter, we're almost on the same page. My impression is that the gov't is pressuring Apple to write a new version of iOS with a backdoor in it.

Not exactly. The phone companies only give them meta-data, but what they capture, via SIGINT, is everything.Bitter Clinger wrote: NSA only captures meta-data. Not content.
