I'll make an educated guess, also known as hypothesis, and reduce it down to two possible things going on, not necessarily mutually exclusive;

1. He was converted to Wahhabism
2. He was converted by Antifa

It only took FBI few hours to decisively say that there is no link to the terrorist group, this is the same FBI that all of these months later is still trying to make connection between Trump and Russia, you know, still can't definitively say one way or the other there, yet just a few hours after this event they are 100% sure that this is not in anyway shape or form related to IS.

Also, strange but it appears to be a targeted attack on country music festival goers. Based on the witnesses who saw the scumbag and his female "companion", they walked through that area first.
