There was no definition of traveling recently passed.

Instructors have to renew every two years, so hopefully he will get his info updated this year when he renews.

JRG wrote:Good news!! I passed the shooting test and the written test today!! Now I just need to get the papers in the mail Monday off to Austin. I shot a 247! Best I've ever done.

It seemed that the CHL class has an enormous amount of "slack" time in it. We spent an hour and a half filling out the paperwork. We then had about 30 minutes of do nothing time while the renewal people were shooting. Lots of dragging time waiting for the instructor to think of what we should cover next.

I guess most of the classes are like this?

Joe
No. In fact, your down time cannot be counted towards your 10 hour minimum. If DPS ever sits in on his class and he is not providing a full 10 hours he risks losing his instructor license.

We hold seperate initial and renewal classes. We don't stop teaching while prints and pictures are being made.

The latter. Run the intro part of the class including the handgun training. Then shoot at 3 yards. Go back to class for the rest of the morning session, then shoot the 7 yards right before the lunch break. Then shoot the 15 yards in the middle of the afternoon session. This will probably work if you have enough lanes and ranger officers to allow everyone to shoot together. If you have a large class and have to split up the shooting sessions, then it may take too much time. I don't know if that will have any negative effect on learning but it sure will break up the monotony.
For us, that would be a logistical nightmare.

propellerhead wrote:Wow! Our class took the test the way a test was meant to be taken. You're on your own and you were armed with what you just learned that day.

The only thing I didn't like about my class was the conflict resolution stuff. It sounded like a college speech class. I think ours went too far from the real conflict resolution and got too academic.

One thing I would like to see is to break up the shooting portion into 2 or 3 smaller sessions and spread those out during the day. Like do 1/3 of the shooting session in the middle of the morning, then another 1/3 before lunch, then another 1/3 in the middle of the afternoon. Unless the state mandates one shooting session at the end of the day, this might be a good way to break the monotony. Heck, include a practice shooting session if time permits.

Could you clarify that?
While he read us the questions for the test every so often he would ask the class to say the answer out loud.
Are you saying you took the test orally, but answered on an answer sheet? The instructor did not hand out copies of the test for you to answer from?

MrDrummy wrote:I didn't mean to make it sound like he took all of us on the same day. You would set up an appointment with him, and he'd take you out there. I do agree that this makes for a bit more of a time committment on his part, and it's not something that every instructor can do. It did make a difference to my wife and I, though. He's still available to talk if we ever have any questions, and he's even taken us out to the range to make sure that we've not developed any bad habits at the range!

There were about 12-15 of us in the class that day.
Got it.

MrDrummy wrote:My CHL class was top-notch.

Instead of taking everyone to the firing line at once, each shooter was taken to the instructor's private range. He knew that there would be some professional shooters, and some beginners, and didn't want that to cause any anxiety or anything. I know that he also wanted to be able to spend as much time as was needed with each applicant.

Rather than call the shooting test a "test," he looked at it more as an instruction time, and helped you to shoot the best score that you could. I felt that I got all of his attention, and actually came away a better shooter than I went in.

Instruction time was also nice, held in his living room, in comfortable chairs, with pens, pencils, and note tablets provided on the tables. Everything was included in the package, and was done in house.

This class was far above what I expected.

Again, I too know that this thread was supposed to point out the bad, but why not throw the good in here too?
How long was the class and what did the students who were not shooting do while he took an individual student into the range?

Oh yeah, how many students?

Very comfortable room, leather armchairs for all students.
All in one package

Minuses:

Almost all of instruction consisted of watching tapes with
very little discussion

Please notify the CHL department at DPS. We (instructors) are only allowed to use a certain percentage of the class time with video.

When you took your concealed handgun class, what did you NOT like about it? What could have been done better?

Was the location comfortable? The seats? Refreshments?

Was the instructor's style of presentation suitable? Were visual aids used? Was a course outline provided? Material for taking notes?

Good post. I am interested also.
