The NRA is always in the cross hairs. The members are portrayed as the most evil people in society by the media and certain politicians because the NRA is the poster child for disarmament of the citizens which would then allow complete socialism.
There are hunters who think we shouldn't have AR-15's. There are people with AR-15's who think people shouldn't have suppressors or fully automatic weapons. I'm sure there are people with pistols for self defense who think people shouldn't hunt. The media gets all of us at each other's throats when we all have a common denominator, firearm ownership.
I know the above sounds like a straw man argument but... years ago in a duck blind with my father-in-law, he told me that nobody needs an AR-15 while holding a semi auto shotgun. I asked him if he knew that the sporting use exclusion was the only reason he could have a semi auto 12ga shotgun and that it wasn't about needs but the 2nd Amendment said I could have an AR-15. That was the end of talking about guns or politics with him as I did enjoy hunting with him. Last year, he started asking me about AR's. I let him hold my different rifles and AR pistol to get a feel for what he wanted. The family pitched in this last Christmas and got him one for a present.
Yes the NRA has some faults. I think the grading system for politicians needs to be changed. It's too easy to get an A rating from the NRA and keep it. I think those in leadership might be in there too long not because they have done a bad job but politics have changed and I do not see the NRA adapting as fast. And no, I do not know what they need to do but I do like how some (particularly Dana Loesch and Colion Noir) have adapted to today's media and fight back. Also, I know it shouldn't matter but they (Dana and Colion) are not old white dudes. This is coming from someone who in a couple of decades will be an old white dude and is a lifetime NRA member.
