Everything I've read, much of it from people who know the Clintons, says Hillary was the puppetmaster behind Bill's political career. The general concensus is that Bill couldn't have gotten elected dog catcher if not for Hillary's machinations behind the scenes.
I don't think Hillary could have gotten elected dog-catcher in any kind of real race (Senator of NY was not in any sense a competitive race). She is smart, and she can analyze and plan and see how things should go, but she cannot execute the politics of them very well in public. Bill does that well beyond what most people of any party are capable of (and he has had a lot of advisors, not just Hillary). As I said earlier, I don't think he is as sharp as she is intellectually, but that is only one dimension of real intelligence. He is far better at reading people, allies and opponents, and saying whatever it takes at the moment to move ahead. I always thought the man can lie with complete sincerity, which fellow Dem Bob Kerrey confirmed.

The problem in the future is that just like the lightweight we have in office now, when 9/10s of the press, the entertainment industry, all the social media companies, and the IRS pitch in to elect a left wing loon regardless of competence, it is a tough combo to beat.

In view of the sharply declining support for gun control among citizens (not liberals in office) in the U.S. , I'm more than a little surprised that she would make such a statement. I would have thought that she would have learned from his husband's gross miscalculation on the assault weapons ban in 1994.

True, but Bill is by far the more politically savvy of the two. While Bill is able to cultivate the image of lovable rogue in public, Hillary can't keep her essential coldness, vindictiveness, and feeling of superiority from showing through. She's just not as smart as Bill. She may have a higher tested IQ, but she does not really understand people, at least people who don't think like she does. I think both of them are sociopathic, but Bill understands how to manipulate people's levers much better. She would have gone no where if she hadn't married Bill. That statement that will make the left/feminists froth at the mouth, but it's true. Remember, as a young lawyer in Washington DC she was fired from the commission that was preparing to impeach Nixon for lying and unethical behavior for hiding official congressional files that would have helped Nixon, and writing a brief that falsified congressional history of impeachments. (Note that Wikipedia omits this.) It was an early indicator of her frame of mind, and her contempt for others.

It wasn't that being a woman would have held her back, it's that she is only true to her own ambitions, and will do any slimey thing, and throw slime at anyone else, to get her way. Bill is slimey too, but he hides it behind the facade of being a happy friendly caring guy. Hillary has all the warmth of a mafia hit man, and I think she can't help occasionally letting her disdain break out when she is talking about her "enemies." (IIRC she was the originator of the term "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy"). The fact that she's actually incompetent at leading (see, for example, first attempt at government take over of healthcare, entire tour as Secretary of State) may be starting to tell. There's no doubt a bunch of Demo true believers that will support her no matter what, but I think there are a lot of others that are thinking OMG how do we get her out of the way. Last time it was racism -- "let's push the black guy instead of the woman, she can't effectively campaign against that".

I'm sure she regards her statement as measured common sense, but the driving factor behind it is she can't stand that these people, these inferior-liberty-loving-gun-toting-Constitution-quoting rubes, have made such political strides in the past 20 years. Privately owned guns are a symbol of everything she hates, that gets in the way of her superior comprehension of how to run the world. It doesn't compute that her side has been losing on this, so she has to say something (and rile up her base), but her disdain and vindictiveness doesn't let her see that what's "common sense" to her just exposes her totalitarian tilt.
