This one came home with me. Sig Sauer M17 Surplus. It is essentially in new, un-issued condition with no rack or inventory marks. It was a hard choice, pick one had seen action or go for best condition. Decided on condition.

I'm counting this as a brown gun, at least until the new Hogue grips arrive.

Sig P226 Single Action Only, 9mm, w/ Dawson Precision sights and a 20rd mag. It's a tack driver. Like shooting a 22 after all the rounds I have through lighter, striker-fired polymer guns. But, doubt I ever carry it unless I'm feeling particularly rambunctious.

If I didn't have one, I wouldn't hesitate. That said, I do want a 30.06 for historical* reasons.

The 308 version is identical to the 30-06, all the same parts, but has a new barrel with correct chamber. Garand en bloc clips work just fine. The only other difference is a small, white polymer 'plug' piece that prevents you, or anyone else, from loading a 30-06 round by mistake.

Rifle runs great. I've made no changes to it at all. Running the gas plug it came with and have zero issues.

How do you like having the Garand set up in .308? I will be traveling to the CMP in a couple of weeks to shoot in the IDPA National Championship. Will be my first time there and probably my last. I really like it, but it's almost too pretty to shoot. Thinking seriously about buying Field or Service grade 30.06 that I won't feel the need to baby. Plus I'd love a WW2 era Garand. My 308 Special receiver is from the last year of production in the mid-50s.

It's definitely one of the top 3 or 4 I'd have to try and save over all the rest.

Both are great, but I really love the red tint to that finish. Looks terrific.

Okay, I added another 'brown' gun.

Browning Citori 725 Skeet, 30", 12ga. This means I'm going to go 50 straight for the first time, right? (it's never the shooter's fault)

Here's the dope from the CMP COO, "Our .308 Win. caliber CMP Special M1 Garands are chambered for .308 Win. The barrels are marked .308, the chambers are cut with a Clymer manufactured .308 spec. reamer, the headspace is checked with a Clymer .308 spec. go and no go gauge, and the rifles are function test fired with .308 Win. caliber Atomic brand ammunition."

I don't plan to shoot any hot 308/762 through it but it would probably be fine. Some people say you need to change out the gas plug, but I'm going to run it as is and see what happens.

There are old, post-war Navy 308 conversions running around with sleeved chambers. They're not considered safe to shoot.

And it' s not really set up scout style, but then again that's exactly how I'd set up one too.

This little beauty showed up today. Mailed my paperwork the CMP on Dec 1. CC was charged on Dec 5. It's a reward for achieving a shooting goal and a little Christmas bonus rolled in one.

M1 Garand with a new barrel and stock, all parts reparkerized, and chambered in 308. It has a block to keep anybody from loading the wrong rounds. Receiver dates to 1955 ~ 1957, from Springfield Armory.

Put three coats of boiled linseed oil on throughout the day. I think it'll take some more. It's sitting in a warmed box overnight to see how it does. Had a smile on my face ever since I saw it coming off the truck.
