You don't have to break the law to get into trouble in Mexico. You just need to look like a good target - to criminals and police alike. No joke. We use to go several times a year with friends before we all had kids. It's simply too dangerous now, even in the border towns. Used to be so much fun, it's a shame things have turned this way. Even the border towns on our side are shady at best.
If I was going to go accross now, first I need a really good reason. Second, I would never take a gun. I'm sure people still hunt accross the border and I think they can take their guns, but I'm sure there's plenty of pre-work that has to be done before you go. Even then, I'd use guns from the ranch I was visiting before I transport mine over there.
Nothing against Mexico, or it's people. That's just the way I see it. And, well, after all, it is Mexico.
