All have posted very good points about what they would do.
Here is what I hope that I would do. As never having been faced with this. I would try to get to cover while still keeping an eye on the BG and another eye looking for other BG's. At the same time taking out the cell phone to call 911 and reaching for my weapon. At this point only cell phone would be out and hand on weapon. The whole time watching to take everything in to be a good witness. If he fired and shot the employee, I am not sure if I would take action other then being a good witness. Now if he turned towards me, then I would take action. This is all if I am in the store by myself.
If my wife was with me, I would do it different. First would be to make sure that she is safe and behind cover. I would then get the cell phone to call 911, but I would not keep my weapon in the holster, it would be in my hand in a low ready.
