Re: Blue State Refugee moving to TX - Advice?
We've got our Texas Recon 2 schedule worked out, but no plan survives contact with the enemy so we're flexible of course. 7 days and about 1,600 miles. Let me know if you want a free cup of coffee along the way, and we'll try to stop and chat for a bit to hear about your slice of Texas. 4/17 Dallas-...

Too bad you'r not coming down earlier. Mrs. Canvasbck and I are both on rodeo committees and could get you into the worlds largest rodeo for free. No carry there, it's a sporting event, but it really is something to see if you haven't before. Ooo...that sounds cool. Thank you for the offer. I may h...

Re: Blue State Refugee moving to TX - Advice?
Some tips to blend in culturally. We say grace, this might be a new thing for some folks. Perhaps live & let live as the saying goes. We hold the door for the womenfolk, and otherwise try to mind our manners. Folks outside the big cities, or specifically in most of the rural areas will say hell...

Re: Blue State Refugee moving to TX - Advice?
East Texas has a lot to offer. I'm down on the South East coast once you get past the second tier of counties you start finding land with rolling hills and beautiful woodlands. Some specific areas you might want to consider are Jasper, Woodville, Lufkin and as you mentioned Tyler. I tell folks the ...

Re: List of executive actions Obama plans to take
Wait until you see how the actual EO's are worded. I bet they bear little resemblance to the benign descriptions released today. This is all political theater, but it pushes the Overton window over to make horrible and unreasonable things seem "reasonable". Beware of what a Marxist calls ...

Does your 10-year-old dislike doing her homework? Better get her to the nearest couch because she’s got "Developmental Arithmetic Disorder" (billing code 315.4). Maybe you’re a teenager who argues with his parents. Uh-oh. Better get some medication pronto because you’ve got "Oppositi...

Re: Are Liberals Coming Here To Change Minds?
While I like it as an objective, I don't think a libertarian society is possible for a number of reasons, one of which is that it requires a distribution of intelligence among the populace that doesn't exist. However, in such a society, since people would be responsible for their actions, those wit...

Re: List of executive actions Obama plans to take
My father-in-law had a stroke last year and is recovering well. The docs started asking him this year if he's depressed...like a dozen times in one visit. If I was 56 and had a stroke, I'd be depressed... He said, "No, feeling great" every time. Be careful what you and members of your fami...

Re: Are Liberals Coming Here To Change Minds?
While a baseline of manners and morality was shared by the founders, they tended to line up with Libertarian views. For example, "If it neither picks my pocket or breaks my leg, what matter is it to me." --Ben Franklin (pretty sure). OR "My freedom to wave my fists ends where your nos...

Re: Blue State Refugee moving to TX - Advice?
When you go west of Dallas to Ft. Worth, you've moving into desert country; sage brush, scrub trees, etc. East is pine trees, tall forests, etc. Down toward Austin, Houston and San Antonio it thins out as well. Load up Google Maps or Mapquest and locate Dallas. Then switch to satellite view and pan...

Re: Blue State Refugee moving to TX - Advice?
Move to DFW area and I might be able to do something about that driving job for your family member. Can probably even get something that runs Texas only too. Thank you. My brother in law's situation is a bit tricky. He's got 3 kids (13,15,17) and a wife to move. Select baseball ends in July so they...

Have you ever heard of Aquaponics?...My dad successfully gardens in the hill country (Boerne) the normal way. Yes. I'm all about doing some outside the box food production. I'm not in it for therapy. We want good healthy organic groceries. I grew up gardening with my folks and tried to avoid it...I...

Re: Blue State Refugee moving to TX - Advice?
Thank you all very much for your input. I spent 10 years of my USAF career in NorCal...and as beautiful as it was, I got home to Texas as soon as I got out of the service. NorCal folks get lumped in with the higher density of wing-nuts south of Sacramento which isn't fair. In WA we refer to Californ...
