NonesuchArms wrote:The site needs a lot of improvements...however I hope you have all noticed that the poor performance is being fixed according to a message at the top of the home page. The upgrades may actually be causing part of the problem.

From the site...
"We are preparing TGT for a major upgrade. Some Features may not be available."

As far as buying and selling:

- I've bought and sold about a dozen or so guns through that site over the years. It has declined from what it was back in the day

- If buying, it is still very good if you have the time to parse through tons of ads per day until you find just the right deal and then pounce on it before anyone else does.

- For selling, it is great and will bring you a fair dollar - or more than a fair dollar if you're a jerk that lists your used gun for over Academy retail - so long as you are willing to ignore the price hagglers long enough.

- If you are looking to trade, and you have the patience to wait it out and not jump on the first semi-interesting trade offer you receive, then it can make for some great trade opportunities. I usually use it in this capacity because I rarely like to see an old one go without a new one coming in...and would rather buy new in most cases.

TIP - Make sure to do a bill of sale and copy the info from the other person's DL/LTC regardless of being buyer, seller or trader. All serial #'s in the transaction should go on the BOS just to cover yourself!

I hope the new site at least performs well.
The Zip code proximity part has been dead again for months now. I don't want to search for guns in Houston when I live in Wichita Falls. The worst part of the site is that the owner NEVER responds to questions. NEVER!
Definitely I agree with using a Bill of Sale. Many here do not. I hope the new site fixes the defects. I used to be able to get some great purchases on the site.

It seems there needs to be a moderator to respond to complaints about scammers.

The sight needs a better search engine.

The sight needs better funding to hire someone to make the sight better.

Am I on target here? Anything else?
All of the above. They recently have fixed their proximity search by mileage portion so I at least can use the site but it took years for them to do it.

Re: Has anyone noticed the decline of Texas Gun Trader?

I have never sold anything but I have bought stuff. Just use good precautions and make sure that you are not dealing with scammers (or worse). People that just signed up would worry me. If you live in a major city like Dallas your chances of selling are better. If you live in "Rural Area" like I do the chance is slim. They offer a bill of sale that you can download. I always used it but that would be your choice.

loscar141 wrote:And whats with some of the requirements that some of the seller have? asking for 2 forms of identification, that's ridiculous.
I sent a reply to someone for a gun I thought is a good price, I told him I would buy the gun for asking price, but I would only show him my LTC.
and if he insisted on 2 forms of identification, than I would also need two forms from him as well. with the risk of identity theft, I think that's only fair.
At least you can find a seller. I can't.

Re: Has anyone noticed the decline of Texas Gun Trader?

I posted this almost 2 years ago and the site still does not work well especially if you live in "Rural" areas. The owner never answers email. I wonder how much it costs to buy-run a site like he has and whether there is any money in running it.

Re: Has anyone noticed the decline of Texas Gun Trader?

It has been almost 1 year since I posted this question and the feedback has been interesting. I live in what the site calls Rural Texas and unless someone actually posts the city name in the ad I can not find anything locally. So, I search with a keyword of my city and see if anything is available. I have had some very good purchases on this site when dealing face to face with a seller. For those of you in the larger areas this is not a concern. The site owner is non-existent as far as I can tell unless you are buying an ad and his name shows up on your credit card bill. Of course there are scams. Let the buyer beware.

Re: Has anyone noticed the decline of Texas Gun Trader?

When you live out in relatively rural area where buying and selling may involve a long drive it is worth while. If you live in Dallas or Houston probably not. I have found many good deals locally in the past but no longer. Texas is a big place and driving 100+ miles takes a lot of the deal out of a deal.

The search no longer works.

Has anyone noticed the decline of Texas Gun Trader?

This site used to be a wonderful place for me to find local sources for firearms, supplies, etc with a search by zip but for whatever reason they have completely eliminated this capability and unless you live in a major metropolitan area you just can't find anything close to you. Anyone know of an alternative? The site owners are completely unresponsive, they never answer an email. I don't know what their financial incentive is to run such a poorly organized site. The "if it aint broke don't fix it" moto just hasn't gotten through to them. They seem to have cornered the market though with volume and then ruined it. Any computer pros that want to compete and set up a better site and need a few bucks to help let me know. I am sure we can develop a "good" site with a responsive administrator. Maybe even break even.
