I chose .45 ACP because of my personal bias in favor of the 1911, combined with its proven history. I have to admit that this is a personal choice and there are a lot of other very valid choices for a single defensive handgun. I would probably be very satisfied with a .357, .44, or even a 9mm. Since I have carried a .380, I would even admit that I could live with this if I were forced to.

I personally like the argument about carrying the same round in pistol and rifle, so I would go find an old Marlin Camp Carbine in .45 also.

And I also have to admit that if I knew I was going to be in a shooting, a pistol would not be my first choice at all. A 75mm Howitzer is my choice for a known fight (with as many friends and as much support as I can get), with several different rifles as a second through whatever choice.
