Mike1951 wrote:Actually, I saw PT1911's on at least 3 tables yesterday at Reliant, all marked fairly at $499. Some had PT1911's marked near $700. These would have been either the factory laser model or the factory night sites model. I didn't bother to look closely enough to tell.

There have been no major issues that I know of and relatively few minor ones. Taurus did begin chamfering the firing pin hole at some point in production and some tried to make a negative out of this. It turned out to be a non-issue. (It appeared to be chamfered a little more than custom shops typically do as an enhancement.)

The following forum remains one of the best ways to stay current on the Taurus 1911.

Yep, blind as a bat...If they'd been a snake, I would have probably been bit...

I may have hung out too long back in the crafts area of the show...

What are the thoughts on this pistol now?
I have a friend looking at one, so would like some feedback from you owners!!

Thanks

I didn't see any at the gunshow here in Houston this last weekend...

Not sure if that means they are out of the first batch they produced for the American market, or they are not making enough to keep up with demand...Maybe they are moving pretty fast...

I haven't seen any used ones sitting on anyones tables either...

I don't think I've heard of any real problems with them yet...

Here's something to think about...

Even though there may be remedies to some of the things on a pistol like this...

Does anyone get the feeling that Taurus really wanted to limit the way some of us like to tinker with stuff???

With what appears to be an effort by the designers and manufacturer to put in proprietary issues into the design that only a gunsmith "might" be able to modify???

I believe the whole issue makes owning one or more of these, half the fun to see what you actually can do with this pistol...Not that much needs to be done with them...

Just something to think about...I still like the design overall...

Mike1951 wrote:Just a few notes to go along with the praise I've been posting.

The black finish rusts very easily. This is not really a problem for me, since sooner or later, I plan on getting both of mine done in Black-T.
But, until then, extra care will be required.

If you decide to change grips, you will need to buy a set of grip screws.
The heads on the Taurus screws are too large to fit other grips.

On one of mine, removing the ambi safety for disassembly was extremely difficult. Once I successfully removed the grip safety from the other PT1911 and could see how it was made, I had the courage to force the stubborn one. The right side should come out with jiggling and tugging. I eventually gained enough clearance to get a flat bladed screwdriver with a business card folded around it underneath and pried it loose. It should not require that and I suggest long periods of tugging before going that route. Position of the safety did not seem to matter for the right side. Once the right side is removed, the left side removes as a normal safety from the position between off and on.

From what I could tell after disassembly, Taurus looks to have changed the shape of the Series 80 parts enough to claim that it's not Series 80. But I would say the function is the same.

The Series 80 system is pretty much a non-issue.

The disassembly problem shouldn't reoccur and the grip screws is a one time thing.

The finish won't bother anyone who goes shooting and then thoroughly cleans the gun. It might be an issue for a carry gun, where it is handled a lot and not cleaned as often.

I still think the PT1911's are an excellent bargain and recommend them.
Thanks for the breakdown report...

You just bullet pointed just about everything I saw in my cursory inspection that last weekend...Since I didn't get a chance to field strip it  This nagging little voice in my head told me there had to be something funky in there that would get someones attention...

But then again, nothing I have heard is a show stopper on this pistol...

- New grips and screws (cosmetic)

- New finish depending on the intended use...

And boom, you may have a pretty good firearm there...

I'd almost see if there was anything that could be done to tighten it up even more tolerance-wise, maybe even a trigger job???

Who knows...

With how fast this thing is getting attention, should be fun to check out...

I saw 3 of them at the last gunshow here in Houston this last weekend...

Two at one vendor for $499 NIB, and one at another for $470 NIB...

Felt good...Like a standard 1911 (go figure, ;-) ), but for some reason it felt a little lighter than your average clone...Which I am thinking that can't be a bad thing...

The ambidexterous thumb safety was easy to operate, not much to think about there...

The finish I thought was adequate, parkerized is something I am attracted to for some silly reason... (its funny to me! dirnit!)

The grips seem to also be a little on the cheap end...Too much like extruded plastic to me...That can be remedied...

The sights leave something to be desired, so that will have to be replaced...IMO...Something named "Heinie" on any firearm I own just doesn't sound right for some reason... ;-)

All in all I am getting closer...One or both of these vendors should be at the Pasadena show here in a couple of weekends...So we'll see if they have moved these products and have a couple more ready to fly...

Just an FYI post...

This is actually starting to sound pretty good...

I brought a co-worker with "Mrs. Stevie-D / Wife Unit" and I to PSC day, and he's got the bug now...

And since I told him he'll feel better buying two pistols in the near future, I told him he should think about this one as well...I told him I was...

Sure you can spend $$$$ on a good Springfield, Kimber, Les Baer, Colt, etc etc etc...

But for the prices we have been seeing, I can't see how this would be a bad thing as a solid .45 1911 platform...

The co-worker was also impressed with El Gato's "MP"...That was one smooth shooting little pistol!

So I told him, "...if your going to go off the deep end, go well armed..."

Man, I need to start writing this stuff down!

So far its a confirmed negative on the factory trigger settings, and the Hienie sights...

Both of which I believe could be worked on or replaced...

Since this is a new product for them, and the robust-ness of the firearm is a legitimate concern as it should be...I believe we should keep our eyes peeled for these to show up from time to time at the ranges we go to...

Just nobody laugh at me if I get one...I'm a sensitive guy, and my feelings get hurt easily...

Ohhh, and BTW, the integral safety in the hammer does not offend me at all...As long as the mechanism doesn't interfere over the life and operation of the pistol, I'm ok with it...

Strictly from the standpoint that it'll never be engaged...ever...

I fiddled with the one on Wife Unit's PT24/7 9mm when she got it...

It was kinda a neat feature, one that had a good positive on/off cycle...I'm sure the same engineering went into the PT1911 system...

But if I get one...It'll get no more attention than the last one did...Then that little key will just find some little nook or cranny in the safe at home...Hopefully never to be needed ever...

Recalling what I saw in the article, and the experience I have with another PT series pistol my wife owns...

I would say the factory has improved its machining and assembly operations from what I have heard in the past, that left something to be desired years ago...

The trigger work and design they do seems to be on the heavy side, to which I say you just get used to, or obviously having some resonable work do on that to your liking...

I think the quality is good, but I do have a concern about the durability over time with what I think should be a reasonable workout schedule over the lifetime of the firearm...That is one of the unknowns...

But the pricing to me might offset those concerns...

The only thing I do not know about is that would the pistol take a standard 1911 Wilson Combat or other comparable magazine and operate reliably with those products??? I can't assume either way until I see or hear good info on that...

I wanted to hear from people I know, before I figure "what the heck" lets do it...

Taurus 1911...Is it too good to be true???

I made a visit up to my Dad's over Labor Day weekend, and he had an American Rifle (NRA magazine) edition showing the new Taurus 1911 .45

I believe that was where I first saw it, but thats beside the point...

I remember some points of the article and range report, and was interested...

The handgun almost looks like a spitting image of a 5" Kimber in a lot of the lines and features, the accuracy sounded pretty good right out of the box...

And the price caught my eye as well...$600 approx. MSRP

Always looking for a new aquisition, and the price seems right, and y'all tend to get around more than I these days...

Input, opinion, ups or downs???
