Re: Lesson Learned - Gym nonCarry

Looks like the only things that weren't retuned to me were the boots that my wife got me last Christmas and my NHRA cap. I've since replaced the boots & wasn't really worried about the cap.

Re: Lesson Learned - Gym nonCarry

I haven't been back to that gym since my stuff was stolen. I actually haven't been back to any gym since then.

TexasCajun wrote:Well it's after 3:30am & I'm on here because I can't sleep. Tonight, I went to the gym. And as usual I stored my street clothes, boots that my wife got me for Christmas, wallet, keys, and my handgun in one of the lockers while I worked out. My heart sank to the floor when I went back to the locker room after I was done to find everything gone. I thought I was being careful by going into one of the private changing rooms to disarm/change & putting everything in my gym bag before storing my stuff in the locker & locking it with a padlock. Wrong! I'm not 100% sure, but I think that the lockers near mine that still had locks on them were there when I first went in. Needless to say, I'm not the least bit happy about the possibility of some thug walking around with my house & car keys, my address AND my handgun. I've already filed the police report, canceled my cards, & requested a replacement CHL. I'll spend tomorrow having all the locks re-keyed and getting my new DL & bank cards. Until then, it's just me and my 2 12ga shotguns, Beretta Nano, & every single little sound that has me doing rounds & checks around the house...

So hindsight being 20/20, I should have gone to the gym in workout clothes carrying my Nano, wallet, & keys in a gym bag small enough to keep with me on the workout floor. Or possibly getting a belly-band or sticky holster to keep the Nano on me. Going forward, I'm going to cancel my gym membership since I've been a bit wary of some of the 'clientele' that they seem to attract.
So the unthinkable happened yesterday. I got a call from the gym with a police officer on a second line. While doing repairs in the gym locker room, they found my bag with most of my belongings - including my Glock!!!! The officer thinks the thief probably cut my lock, emptied the locker & tossed the bag on top of the lockers to come back & get it later but over shot his mark.

I had pretty much written off my pistol so yesterday was a great surprise. Can't wait to give it a good one over & take it out to the range!

On a side note, there may be a new entry on texas3006.com in the coming months. The gym manager was apparently freaked out that ordinary citizens can walk around in public with loaded handguns and then got mad when he found out that the police weren't going to arrest me for having a gun at the gym. He was so upset, the cop decided to meet me in the parking lot rather than have me go inside to claim my property.

Re: Lesson Learned - Gym nonCarry

Before all of this, the appeal for me was going to the gym put me in the workout mindset. Plus all of the different equipment made it easier to keep motivated by changing up my routine every few weeks. Buy now the cost has far outweighed the benefits. $30/mo at the non-ghetto place was steep considering we have a (relatively) new baby. And the $10/mo places all seem to cater to the element that I'd rather keep at a distance. If I could find a $10/mo place that attracts a decent clientele I'd go in a heartbeat.

Re: Lesson Learned - Gym nonCarry

I have a Lockdown combination car safe with a cable. The problem with leaving my fun in the car is that there is just as much opportunity for theft in the parking lot as there is in the locker room. And I believe that going from the business to my car is where I'm most likely be at risk. So I've solved the problem by not updating my billing info with the gym & letting their robocalls go to voicemail. I've come to enjoy the added family time taking walks with my wife & son.

Re: Lesson Learned - Gym nonCarry

Picked up a new full size pistol this weekend to replace my stolen Glock. With the scarcity of 9mm lately, I figured it's time to start expanding my caliber set. I picked up a brand new Smith & Wesson M&P .40 on Saturday. I haven't had a chance to take her out for a spin yet, so I'll try to get out to PSC next weekend.

Re: Lesson Learned - Gym nonCarry

The NRA insurance check came in yesterday. $287 for my gen3 Glock 17. It's about what I expected. They calculated the "actual cash value" at $387 minus $100 deductible.

Re: Lesson Learned - Gym nonCarry

As soon as it stays light out longer, the wife & I will start walking either in the park or around our neighborhood.

I've come to terms with the fact that there are bad people in the world & I realize that although not as careful as I should have been, I wasn't negligent. Any wrong doing with my gun falls on the head of the bad guy. But I still don't like it. Thanks, though.

Thanks. Somehow I doubt they'll find the theif. The responding officer basically just went into secretary mode when there was no video to look at. So at this point I really hope that they don't find them. Because the only way to do that would be to trace my gun if it were used in a crime. And that's the part that really bothers me - that my gun will probably be used to hurt an innocent. At this point I hope it just disappears like a fart in the wind.

Re: Lesson Learned - Gym nonCarry

Well here's where things stand currently. I've gotten new DL, CHL, credit card, debit card, & key card for work. I've re-keyed my house & car. I've set up a credit watch on Experian. I've contacted my homeowner's insurance - I'm covered, but I didn't meet the deductible. I found out that I did activate my firearms coverage through the NRA when I joined a few years ago & since my membership has remained in place, I'm covered for the gun theft. Looks like I'm well on my way to this being a very good learning experience. But it's been a lot of extra work.

Up to a max of $2500.00
I thought about that. I can't remember if I've already activated it or not, though. Unfortunately, I can't remember my login/password, and they need my membership number in order to do a reset. So I'm waiting to hear back from them about it.

Take my advice, guys. Don't ever lose your wallet!!!
Your NRA membership # is on your magazine label.
I get the e-edition...

Re: Lesson Learned - Gym nonCarry

And just heard back from the insurance company. This would be covered under my homeowner's policy, but my deductible is $1000. So far, my losses only total $900. So looks like my EDC replacement will have to be out of pocket. :grumble

Got enough 12ga. defensive ammo?
2 12ga filled with 00 Buck. I've also got a Beretta Nano with 2 six round mags + 1 8 round mag and seveal boxes of range 9mm. Not the most ideal set-up for sure. But once life gets back to normal, I'll start a real home defense reconfigure.
