I guess I didn't remember the numbers correctly.......but that is still a HECK of a lot of UDTs KIA. JW is a worm. He was a worm before Chris Kyle ever joined the SEAL teams. The point I was trying to make before is that I don't think it serves anything to belittle UDT contributions, just because they have been replaced in the public eye by the SEAL teams.

I understand the UDT had little combat exposure in Viet Nam, but they certainly had a big part in WW2.
http://navyseals.com/nsw/navy-seal-history/Of the 175 NCDU and UDT men on Omaha beach, 31 where killed and 60 wounded. Their Teammates on Utah Beach faired far better because the beach was considerably less fortified. Four were killed and11 wounded, when an artillery shell landed among one of the teams working to clear the beach. Weeks before the invasion all available Underwater Demolition men were sent from Fort Pierce to England. The largest loss occurred at the landing on Omaha beach, Normandy. Within months of the War’s end, the UDT teams were dispersed. This ended a trying but evolutionary time in the history of Naval Special Warfare.
On 6 June 1944, in the face of great adversity, the NCDUs at Omaha Beach managed to blow eight complete gaps and two partial gaps in the German defenses. The NCDUs suffered 31 killed and 60 wounded, a casualty rate of 52%. Meanwhile, the NCDUs at Utah Beach met less intense enemy fire. They cleared 700 yards of beach in two hours, another 900 yards by the afternoon. Casualties at Utah Beach were significantly lighter with 6 killed and 11 wounded. During Operation OVERLORD, not a single demolitioneer was lost to improper handling of explosives.

It is instinctive to extend benevolence & make concessions for the welfare of young widows with children. Nothing disingenuous about this as there is not a person here who wouldnt want every benefit for our loved ones in such a case.b322da wrote:In steps the lamb where lions fear to tread.
I think that it may be somewhat disingenuous of this forum to fairly unanimously consider a decedent's estate to be his "widow," particularly where much, but by no means all, of the financial value of that estate may have come from the sale of what a jury has found to be defamatory material, and with the jury having found that nearly 3/4 of the damages assessed were for unjust enrichment. Furthermore, a real question as to who will pay what, considering that the other defendant, the publisher, apparently had insufficient insurance, is there in between the lines.
I look forward to hearing from someone who, when it happens, can let us know a little more about the ultimate outcome of the lawsuit.
I am taking no position on the merits of the lawsuit. I know only what I read in the OP's cite, which appears to most commentators here to be quite adequate on which to base one's conclusions.
Jim
It is my understanding that the publisher was not a part of this suit and has no liability. I also dont think JV has a case against the publisher. It never printed anything derogatory about him. It merely printed a book that made reference to an unknown as "Scruff face"

I think it very improbable that the feds would send in a team to shoot mere dregs who were taking stuff that was close to being salvage. The risk vs. reward is astronomical - especially when the vast majority of the targets would have been minorities.VMI77 wrote: A lot of stuff went on during Katrina that we'll never know about. I agree that it sounds far fetched, but given the chaos and the undoubtedly covert nature of the operation if it did happen, it seems possible, though unlikely, and I also think it's possible it would escape the news and the deaths written off as violence.
My first question is why? What would be the objective?
I also question setting up a sniper post on the dome. There are high rise buildings nearby that would offer better logistics and cover (especially from all the news helicopters) So if the objective was to stop looting, two snipers wouldnt have been very effective against the mass of looters.

It couldn't be because at first everyone just believed everything Kyle said and then after hearing the testimony in court and having some reporters actually try and check Kyles stories they started finding more and more lies? No it must be because of a publicist.[/quoteEEllis wrote:Jim Beaux wrote:The reason for all these negative stories regarding Kyle are from JV's publicists. Re: Jesse Ventura wins $1.84M in defamation suit v. Chris Ky
With respect to the verdict I initially thought Kyle may have taken liberties with the truth and "fluffed the facts" to promote the book. I didnt think JV would say what Kyle alleged.....but in hindsight....well, just maybe.
Consider that JV says outlandish things. He likes to shock, and he likes to showboat. He also makes abrasive "in your face" type statements. He is a showboat with questionable judgement. Now in reflection I cant say he wouldnt have made such a statement.
Sure, the debate is over, it's academic now. The verdict proved he had a case; but continuing this action against Kyle's widow certainly shows he lacks the grace and character that would have tempered the remarks he is said to have made.
Our grace and character governs the "just because we can doesnt mean we should" & JV sold his reputation cheap. After this there will never be doubts about who he is.
