Doncha know that Winston Churchill is spinnin' in his grave? He who used to like to pose for photos with a stogie sticking out the side of his mouth, and a Thompson machine gun in his hands.

The biggest legislative blows to UK arms ownership came in 1988, under Margaret Thatcher as PM, and in 1997, the biggest hit, the Firearms Amendment No. 2, Act of 1997, the one that essentially did away with private handgun ownership was legislation introduced by--believe it or not--Tony Blair's Labour Party administration. It was, in fact, the first significant piece of legislation that passed under Blair as Prime Minister.

Re: Unsatisfied with Gun Control, UK implements SWORD CONTROL

John Farnam (Defense Training International) sends out periodic emails he calls his "quips"; kind of an email blog. I just had to share part of the one that came in early this morning:
This from a LEO friend in the UK: "In the UK, when an officer displays the slightest interest in firearms, he is automatically disqualified from all armed assignments. In addition, his career is toast at that point, as knowledge of firearms, let alone shooting and gun-handling skills, constitutes a permanent bar to promotion. One of our officers, who was armed, was subsequently disarmed (removed from our Armed-Police Group) because of his 'unhealthy interest' in developing individual skill with weapons!"

Sergeant: ...Showing you how to defend yourselves against anyone who attacks you with armed with a piece of fresh fruit.[/quote]
Good one! In fact, that whole, short script, old as it is, seems more pertinent now than it did back in the 70s: http://www.intriguing.com/mp/_scripts/fruit.asp.

I wonder if Wales will issue a Concealed Tiger License...
