Oops, asked and answered already. Sorry. Now that the meds have smoothed out, I'll add a few thoughts. First, having a spare tire (in the trunk not waist), doesn't mean you fear an immanent flat, but most probably don't fear a flat because they do have the spare in the trunk. Second, from what you've already said, you seem to already keep more 'options' "on or about you" than some do. Until I got my CHL, I would only carry in the car on road trips. Even with 2 alarms, I wouldn't want to leave the car parked out of my sight, because I'm more concerned about what could happen with a burglary or some kids looking to joy ride. I feel the safest place for my weapon is on me. Second place is behind the gate, in my home with the alarm and 100 lb dog on guard duty. Third, in regard to "defense of others", as has been said countless times on this forum, "it's NOT a BatMan card". Situational awareness and avoidance are your best first defenses, but should I find myself in a situation, I ask myself 'what would I do if I were not carrying?', and 'would I feel compelled to act?'. I evaluate the situation and try to know what I don't know. For example, if I come upon a male holding a gun on a female holding a knife, whether carrying or not, I would take cover, and call 911, for starters. I don't know enough about the situation to 'engage' a target, so I would just try to safely be a good witness. Chivalry might influence one to 'rescue the damsel', but perhaps she was a knife wielding mugger who chose poorly. If I start by trying to know what I don't know, then I feel I can at least make better decisions. As said before, you shouldn't feel pressured to carry, and if carrying no pressure to use. Just some thoughts for consideration. I hope everybody has a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving.Zylo_X wrote:Mitch,
Thanks for sparking some thoughtful discussion. Before I continue, can you please clarify a point? In your scenario of "one chance to get it wrong", are you applying that to "defense of others", outside of immediate family?? I would think that "defense of self or others", with "others" being immediate family would generally be a pretty clear cut scenario. Thanks, Z

Mitch,

Saying it that way, Mitch, puts things in a different light than 'just nice to have', so please allow me to lend support this way...mitchntx wrote:And based upon your taking issue with my points of view and actions on other occasions on this forum, I think you completely missed my point of view once again.johnson0317 wrote:I believe that is precisely my point.mitchntx wrote:And probably once at getting it wrong, as well.johnson0317 wrote:You only get on chance at getting this right.

Not "one chance to get it wrong" as in I'll be dead, rather "one chance to get it wrong" by making a bad decision.
I realize and my ego is not so fragile that I admit, I'm not trained well enough to be able to make a life or death decision in the heat of the battle.
I'm not talking about the obvious situations where someone is trying to smash in my door, running at me with a knife or threatening one of my family members with grabbed collar and closed fist. It's those not so clear situations that concern me most.
If I had easy access to LEO style training and maintained the same quality of requal training that LEOs have, then I would feel better about a daily carry.
But I don't.
So I chose a more conservative route and pray for devine intervention BEFORE an incident begins rather than praying for guidance in MIDST of an incident.
FWIW ... on my hip right now is a SA 1911A1 with 185 grain critical defense. I'm about to head out the door with my 7.62 AK to go feral hog hunting.
So I'm not anti-gun nor am I anti-carry. I am anti-paranoid, though ... simply because it can cloud sound judgement.
Recognizing the need for more training, shows that you do have "sound judgement". You shouldn't feel pressured to carry, and if carrying, no pressure to use. Additionally, even trained military and LEOs would prefer to not use deadly force. We each take the course we're comfortable with, and pray for the best.
If this was your first time reading Mr. Annoyed, you see why we all appreciate his wise words. Thanks TAM

Re: 6 month after recieving my license ...
Yes indeed, this is all about the "good discussion". I could have just answered your OP with "NO", but what fun would that be? We're all just gonna do it our own way (hopefully within the law), and hope for the best, and I'm not trying to convince anybody of anything. How sad that we've 'progressed' from barns to bunkers? It always comes down to we the people working together.mitchntx wrote:Good discussion. Thanks for insights.
And bring that shovel and once finished, I'll help you with yours ... kinda like an old fashioned barn raisin' ...

Re: 6 month after recieving my license ...
I apologize if you thought I was impugning you're support of 2A. I'm truly just trying to understand what I see as a 'disconnect' between jumping through all the hoops to have the CHL, and then thinking its just 'nice to have'. Seems like you'd just be happier in an open carry state, but then wouldn't we all?? For me, the line between everyday and WCS is fluid, like the tide. I try to be as prepared as possible at all times. I regularly work night shifts for extended periods, so the 'pinnacle of my week' might be a 4am trip to Wally World. I've survived a gun fight with a knife, and 18 straight hours at a Black Jack table in Vegas, but I'm not that young anymore. If the CHL keeps me 'legal' then its more than just 'nice to have'. For my WCS, I figure nobody is gonna be checking plastic, and have planned accordingly. As 'they' say, 'Anybody more prepared than me is just Paranoid.'
Your armory already seems well stocked for WCS, so I guess I'll bring the beans and a shovel and help you dig the bunker.

Re: 6 month after recieving my license ...
Yes, you added as I posted, but the original premise of 'nice to have' doesn't seem to line up in my feeble mind. To me, it seems like someone going out of their way to get a Ferrari, Lambo, Corvette, etc., only then noticing the posted speed limit signs. I'm not trying to give you a hard time, but did you have a specific reason for getting the CHL??mitchntx wrote:Or maybe I DO realize the commitment. Perhaps you'd be better off NOT carrying, until you need it.
I added that a weapon is in all vehicles. So while travelling, I do have adequate protection.
I also have loaded Mossbergs (plural) stashed about the house for adequate protection.
With so many 30.06 signs hanging around here, I'm walking parking lots without the gun any way.
So, I'm wondering why carry if I have to leave it (legally) in the car any way.
Walking Wal-Mart isn't the pinnacle of my week.

Re: 6 month after recieving my license ...
As RPB illustrates so well, when you wake up each morning you don't know what the BGs intend to do. Like car insurance, or health insurance (b4 its mandated ), I go by the old saying, "Better to have and not need, than need and not have". While I wish it didn't cost so much to exercise my Right, I can appreciate the need for education and training the masses, especially those that have not served in the military. Frankly, I'm a little concerned that you made such an 'investment' just because its 'nice to have'. You don't seem to realize its a commitment and a huge responsibility. Many of the problems in this country today are based in the assumption of a Right, without the weight of Responsibility. Where might that lead us?? I'm just sayin' ...RPB wrote:ummm no, not "exactly"mitchntx wrote:... I've actually carried a dozen times. And that was mostly on a friends squanderosa near Stephenville to thwart critters who thought I might be trespassing.
I'm glad I went through all the trouble. It's nice to have a CHL. But for all practical purposes and with how lenient the gun laws are in Texas, I have a hard time convincing myself it was worth it based upon "a nice to have".
Any one else feel that way?
I see it this way
It's kinda like it's nice to have a life vest you hope you never need .... and I read about a fellow kayaker drowning who decided he didn't need to wear it.... I don't want to make the news "that way" and have my relatives read it.... so the life vest I got is a nice comfortable one I'll actually wear ... though it cost more.
CHL wasn't in existance when I was in the hardware store and 5 guys robbed it, nor a couple years before that when I was in an electrobics store and 2 guys robbed it ... I'm alive, I didn't neeed a gun then, but that's because the nice armed men decided to put us on the floor but decided they didn't want to execute us that day.... unlike the ones who dd the same in the Austin yogurt shop, but wanted to take 4 headshots or so into the defenseless ladies after putting them in the back room.
Sometimes the "nice to have" becomes a " I need" but you never know when that instance will occur.
Perhaps you'd be better off NOT carrying, until you need it.
