My hybrid holster has a horsehide back, rather than the standard cowhide. It costs a few dollars more, but makes the holster more protective against sweat and moisture -- especially in the heat we're having. Just a suggestion, but you might want to factor that into your decision making process.
I can't speak to the kydex poking you, but I find a major advantage of the hybrid holsters is that they are much thinner than the full leather ones.
