Do we have any idea when that will take place?

I'm not sure at the moment. Will research it some this afternoon. May someone more learned and experiened in such matters will shed some light on this for us.

I looked mine up and on one of the Conservative scorecards, I think he scored 46 or 47. Turner was 100.

A number of new reps in my area voted for a new Speaker. New blood, new leadership, not the status quo. That's why Ted Cruz in in the US Senate and not David Dewhurst.
And Ted gets hammered for not falling in line too. Pretty sad state of affairs but we must keep fighting.

I agree on both points. It IS up to us to educate, advocate, but I'm telling you -- It's not a lost cause, but it's a very steep climb. Of my circle of friends, me and one other have our CHLs. Nobody else does. We're talking about an 18-2 ratio here. I don't know the numbers of CHLs v regular voters, but I'm willing to bet it's hundreds of thousands v millions

I certainly didn't take your points as a personal attack, I hope you didn't think I attacked you either.

I didn't take your comments as an attack. I was making note to the mods and for the record. Pointed direct questions get construed as personal attacks at times on here.

While 2nd Amendment issues are a big driver for me. I am not against Straus' speakership for this one issue. I look at other issues such as fiscal responsibility, self-enrichment, personal agenda, personal liberty, cronyism, inappropriate influence over public universities, abortion and other such issues.

Straus is not the guy I want as speaker for many reasons.

At the risk of sounding like an infamous ex-Senator -- What difference does it make?

Do you really think the vast majorioty of voters are going to take the time to look up who their rep voted for Speaker of the Texas House? Like I said earlier, we care, but we are a very small group.

This recorded vote is inside baseball stuff. Your average Texas voter doesn't give a flip.

It's our job, as citizens, to do what we can to make others aware and bring positive change. Or, we can continue to allow the status quo and just accept what is dealt us. Which do you prefer?

No. My comments are not a personal attack. I am answering a direct question and asking a direct question in return. It is not and should not be considered a personal attack.

While that voting record looks favorable, that is not total proof that he can't be swayed by an anti-gun constituancy. I stand by my statement.
Isn't that kind of like saying, "since you have not disproven the negative, I stand by my decision to ignore the positive proof?"
You can't really tell for sure how Straus would have voted becuase as Speaker he did not vote on many of the issues. The one Guns issue he did vote on was a Yea http://votesmart.org/candidate/key-vote ... us/37/guns" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'll admit Turner looks favorable, but you never know.

He maneuvers in a way that his dirty work is done by his cronies and he doesn't have to go on record. How many guarantees are there in politics with anyone?

baseballguy2001 wrote:It's time we faced a few facts.

1.) The go along to get along crowd is larger than those of us who wanted to try someone different (for Texas Speaker) this time.

2.) Big legislative gains take vision, and courage. Most politicians don't have any. (Lobbyists don't either)

3.) Most Texas voters are not CHL holders.

Conclusion:

We do this dance every two years and expect a different outcome. We need to temper our expectations and enjoy the two Dove and baseball seasons before the next election.
We haven't had a recorded vote for speaker every two years. Therefore, this is not the same.

Do you have information supporting that he is subject to being swayed by antigunners? I have information Straus has appointed progressive dems that buried pro gun legislation in committee.
I didn't say he was anti gun or could be swayed. I just stated there are a lot of unknowns that can bite you with new people when you place them in a different role. Like I said, I am not a fan of Strauss, but putting Turner in probably would not have been a panacea for the heartburn like many would like to think.

There is no such thing as a panacea when it comes to politics. I think we all realize that based on what has been going on lately. We do have three terms of Straus as speaker on which to know how he operates. I think it's worth taking a calculated risk at times.

Keith B wrote:While I am not a Strauss fan, I am really hate the blanket 'throw the bum out and get anyone different' philosophy.

As Charles stated earlier we don't know for sure how Turner would be on gun legislation. At least with Strauss we have history and know how to work through legislation with him. Sometimes knowing your enemy and being able to out maneuver them is better then dealing with one that may take you by surprise.

In the case of politicians, it's more like out 'manure' them.

I posted a link to Turner's voting record on gun issues. I don't think anyone is advocating "anyone but Straus". I was advocating Turner instead of Straus. We have to make decisions based on the information we have. I haven't seen any information indicating Turner would not be a good speaker or would not be good for pro gun issues. Has anyone else here seen anything to the contrary?

That does not portend well for the future.

This comment right her from Straus is a clue how he views those that don't fall in line. The 19 need some encouragement and a pat on the back for standing on principle.

Re: Record vote for House Speaker?

I don't see Straus being beat at the polls. He is in til he decides to retire or move on to bigger better things.

His family has too many powerful connections for him to lose unless he makes a monumental mistake. Get ready to see him push hard to legalize gambling in Texas. His dad's (family's) investment in Retama park goes a long way in driving Speaker Joe's agenda and motives. They partnered with Vegas money folks to bail out Retama and they are all banking on gambling being legalized.

I'm not promoting for or against gambling. I am just trying to help shed some light on what drives Joe. As usual it is personal interests, greed and power. Not the noble leadership he brings to the table as discussed by his nominators and seconders.

Re: Record vote for House Speaker?

Further indication of just how powerful Straus and the speaker of the house position is indicated by the lack of any votes of present and not voting. Not voting for Straus would have put them in the doghouse no less than a vote for Turner would.
